A few questions with Karmina!

The lovely ladies of Karmina (AKA Kelly and Kamille) were kind enough to answer a few questions I sent them and I thought their answers were fun and gave a lot of insight into their lives as indie musicians. Enjoy!

Assume the people reading this article have no idea about you or your music, what would you tell them about yourselves?

We are sisters who write indie pop/sparkle rock music (sparkle rock is our self-proclaimed genre). We write about truth and  harmonize as much as possible.

You've just come off an amazing west coast tour, are you planning another tour anytime soon?

Yes! Our next tour will probably be on the East Coast. We're in the process of planning that right now.. After that.....we'll probably tour Europe again!

I'm a big supporter of tools like Kickstarter for helping artists finance albums/tours, and I know you've used it to finance your most recent EP "Car Train Ship Plane". Do you see yourselves doing another fundraiser in the future?

Kickstarter was an amazing experience for us. It once again challenged us to think creatively, and work to give back what we were getting. We'd definitely do another campaign like Kickstarter, but we try to be very picky about when we do things of this nature.

As a follow-up to the last question, even though your last EP is only a few months old, I know you guys write a lot, is there new music on the horizon?

So much! That's a very interesting question for us because we constantly want to add new music to our set lists when we're on the road, but we have to exercise a little will power and play the music that we're promoting, even though we've heard it maybe a trillion times. We love our new album, but the newest stuff is always the most fun to play live!

As independent artists, what is the most gratifying part of not being a signed artist? Conversely, what is the most difficult part?

Best part: you get to do everything yourself.  Hardest part: you get to do everything yourself!  But really, being independent gives us complete creative freedom. we don't have anyone questioning our inspiration. If we think of something creative that we feel strongly about, we get our hands dirty and do it! The most difficult part is probably the financials of it all, and juggling the many roles of an artist team between two people.
However, we see this as a worthy challenge of our art. you have to figure out how you're going to supplement the money you're about to spend making a new merch item, or the money you're about to spend getting up and down the west coast on a tour. Sometimes you barely break even, sometimes you go home a little bit richer. It's just part of the struggles and triumphs of an indie artist. and the triumphs feel that much greater when you've gone through so much to achieve them.

You've done some live shows on StageIt.com and I've loved them, is that something you plan on continuing to do?

We *love* StageIt! It's the coolest thing ever for artists to be able to perform from their living room or bathroom or bedroom for fans around the world!  It's an experience for both parties (artist and fan) - It's also very interactive, and you can communicate with your fans in real time!

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

We are inspired by so many people and things. To name a few: Bjork, Imogen Heap, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Coldplay, Elliot Smith, Third Eye Blind. We're also very much inspired by indie artists, as much if not more than mainstream artists.

Finally, what advice would you give other independent artists based on your own experiences?

If you love what you do, never give up.  Be humble, never take yourself too seriously, and always strive to be better.

Thanks once again for taking the time for this interview, I loved it!

Alicia Witt

When actors release music, it's usually a mixed bag, for every one that has real artistic merit, there are a dozen who seem to be doing it for the novelty of it.

Alicia Witt isn't one of them. You may know the beautiful redhead from her role as Zoey on the sitcom "Cybill" or other shows such as "The Sopranos" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" but I'm not here to talk about her excellent acting ability, this is all about the music.

Witt released her self-titled 4 song EP in 2009 and I was extremely impressed by her voice, from the powerful "Anyway" which should be required listening for anyone going through a rough breakup, to a surprisingly dark cover of Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al".

She's got the voice, the charm, passion and the songwriting chops and it finally looks like people might be noticing. "Anyway" was recently featured on the All Access hot AC homepage for radio. So hopefully it won't be long before she's playing everywhere.

Take a listen, if you like what you hear, say something to someone else. Alicia may be a celebrity but she's a true indie artist and relies of word of mouth more than anything else for support.

Check out her official website and buy her music on iTunes and be sure to follow her on Twitter

Free, legal, awesome music anyone?

There are a few indie bands I follow that have put their EPs or albums out for free download and I thought it'd be helpful to put them in a single post. You can't beat the price, and they're all fantastic bands.

Lights creates imperfect perfection with "Siberia"

I've been making excuses and putting off posting my thoughts about "Siberia". I wasn't sure how to approach writing about it, I know I can't post an unbiased review-by-the-numbers because no matter what I say about it, I'd be leaving so much out.

When I first started hearing inklings about the direction Lights was taking with "Siberia" I'll admit to being nervous. I adored her first EP, and then 2009's "The Listening" and I was comfortable with the sound, so when I heard that there would be a grittier sound and possibly some dubstep influence, I wondered if I would be able to love this new album. Even when Lights released "Everybody Breaks A Glass" I still was unsure of the direction, I mean EBAG was GRITTY and there was even *gasp* rap in it (courtesy of Canada's own Shad, who also makes an appearance on "Flux And Flow).

Well, after what seemed like an eternity of delays, it was released and I felt foolish for worrying. I forgot my primary rule..."Always Trust Lights". I read in an interview that Lights was trying to go for a "less perfect" sound on "Siberia" as compared to the immaculate synths of "The Listening" and it paid off, these "imperfections" are perfect.

"Siberia" was written from a very different place in Lights' life than her earlier music, while the music is grittier and edgier, the lyrics are coming from a much happier place. "Siberia" is one of the most honest and uplifting albums I've ever heard. Love, longing and hope are all themes expressed and there is a song for every mood. Also, this is one of the most cohesive albums I've heard in a long time. While you can listen to each song as an individual entity, as a whole, it's an amazing aural canvas especially when you factor in the nearly 9-minute long epic "Day One" which it turns out was the last part of the very first jam session between Lights and her collaborators on this album, the Canadian duo "Holy Fuck".

I could keep writing and writing about "Siberia" but it's really something you're going to have to experience for yourself. Give it a open-minded listen and you'll understand why I'm so taken with this talented young woman. She's, well, brilliant and she's only getting better.

If you want a physical copy of "Siberia" you might have to do some searching in the USA but I believe that Best Buy and FYE carry it. Of course you can also get it it in digital form from iTunes and Amazon
Lights has launched a headlining tour which started in Canada and is going coast-to-coast in the US before heading back to Canada. Check out her official site for dates and tickets.  Her live show is not to be missed! You can also find Lights on Twitter and Facebook.

Cady Groves - This Little Girl

Where do I even begin when talking about Cady Groves? Singer? Check. Songwriter? Check. Force of nature? Oh yeah.

22 year old, Oklahoma-born Cady has already released two independent EPs "A Month Of Sundays" and "The Life Of A Pirate" and in 2010 was signed to RCA Records. She has released two singles from her yet untitled major-label debut, the infectious tribute to friendshit...er..friendship "We're The Shit" and "This Little Girl" - a warning to all guys to treat their ladies right.

Cady has has a distinctive voice, that honestly I can't compare to anyone. It's equally at home with a acoustic folksy ballad or a full-on heavily produced pop-rock tune.

I've really grown to admire her, not just because of her abilities, but because of her sheer honesty. I have *never* seen an artist, let alone a major-label one, be so completely open. From silly, crude jokes, to heartfelt advice given to her fans, she's in one breath, a take-no-prisoners veteran of heartbreak and in the next a sweet, vulnerable girl who you can't help but love.

She's an amazing example, that you don't have to change who you are to make it in the industry. I don't think anything will ever change her, and I hope nothing ever does. It'd be a tragedy. Cady, if you happen to read this. Please keep being you. Don't change for anyone. I think all your fans would agree with me :)

So do yourself a favor and get to know her, I think you'll see all the things I have.

Her official site is CadyGroves.com and if you sign up for her mailing list you can still get a free download of "This Little Girl"

Shannon Curtis

I first noticed California-based singer/songwriter Shannon Curtis when she released her 2007 EP "Boomerangs & Seesaws" and I've been a fan ever since. Shannon show herself to be a exceptional songwriter, and goes the gamut from torch song, to dramatic ballad, to joyous love song. Lately her music has had a more electronic edge to it, and she uses it to good effect as an accent to her already amazing songwriting and vocal prowess.

"Brightest Light In The Room", "Book Of Fiction" and her most recent release "Let's Stay In" are all incredible, emotional songs and I can't recommend them enough. Of course, that's not to say her earlier works aren't also amazing. Personal favorites are "Boomerangs & Seesaws" and "Get Outta Town"

To accomplish everything that she's done without the benefit of a record label is a testament  to both her talent and her drive. She also tours often so you should really check out a show if she's playing near by (I've only had the good fortune to see her once, due to bad scheduling luck on my end)

Shannon is now offering pre-orders for the mega-singles for  "Let's Stay In" not only do you get the original song, you get several re-mixes, a b-side and a really special treat for a lucky buyer. One of the singles will have a "golden ticket" which is redeemable for a custom song written and recorded for the winner by Shannon herself. That's too good to pass up!

Please check out her music on her Official Site and iTunes and follow her on Facebook and Twitter

Changes

So after doing a little soul searching I've decided to make a little change to my editorial policy. While I will still post about indie acts, I didn't think it was fair to exclude signed acts, some of them are still struggling to find an audience as much as many unsigned acts.

I'm not likely to be posting about Gaga or Katy Perry, but some acts like VersaEmerge and Cady Groves aren't exactly household names and honestly deserve the attention and I've already bent the rules by posting articles about Lights and Halestorm, so I might as well make it official.

There, that's pretty much it. Just a little change, and a slightly altered title. I'll be posting my next profile in the next day or so. If you have any opinion on the matter, please feel free to make a comment.

Lights - from Feburary Air to Siberia

I was planning on waiting to write about Lights until after her new album "Siberia" launched next month (Oct. 4) but one thing I'm starting to learn about writing, what you need to write about isn't always what you want to write about, and inspiration doesn't happen on a schedule.

Since tonight was the Canadian debut of her latest music video for "Toes" I guess now is as good a time as any to write this. I'll follow up with a review and impressions of "Siberia" when it's in my hands.

I've been following Lights ever since I saw the video for "Drive My Soul" on MySpace back in January 2009 and was immediately taken by not only her vocal and songwriting talents, but by her imagination as well. I didn't get involved with her fan community until around August of that year, when I knew she had a show in my city coming up and I wanted some advice about a token gift to give her in appreciation.

...and that's how my life changed.

I got to know her fans, and to this day I count some of them amongst my closest friends, even though I haven't had the pleasure of meeting many of them in person. We're all very different people, different ages, from different countries, but bound by the love of a very special young woman.

Lights, I've watched you grow enormously as an singer, a songwriter and as a person. I've seen you become more confident at every show I've been to. You've got so much talent, drive and determination. and I know that you are going to go as far as you want to in your career.

I'm so proud of you, and I haven't even heard more than two songs off the new album, because I *know* it's going to be incredible. It has to be because it's the product of your mind and heart, and I know you're brilliant and have the biggest, most generous heart I've ever known.

Thank you, for the friends, the inspiration, the courage, for changing my life for the better. For giving me faith in people when I just had cynicism, for helping me to remember the good in the world, and how that the bad stuff really doesn't matter in the long run. Thank you for all the good times in the past and the amazing times to come.

Most importantly, thank you for being you.

Can't wait to for the album and the tour. It's going to be amazing!!!

So, now that I've embarrassed myself enough, here are some links to check out.

P.S. I hope I'm forgiven for not waiting for the US release of "Toes" - I'll admit to being weak :)

Margot MacDonald

Margot is one of those artists I appreciate and admire but unfortunately haven't gotten to know very well, and that's a big mistake on my part. Of course, being on the other side of the country does give me a little bit of an excuse. I do adore her music, and I guess that's what matters most :)

So, first a little background. Margot MacDonald is a Washington, DC based singer/songwriter who has been performing since a young age. Her first album "Rising" was released when she was just 12 years old. She first came to my attention not long after the release of her second album "Torn" in 2007 when she was 15. I was blown away when I heard this powerful rock voice coming out of this girl's mouth and with the release of "Walls" in 2009 I was even more impressed and also surprised that she's managed to basically remain a regional phenomenon. From what I've seen, she performs A LOT but isn't well known outside the general area.

Now at 19, Margot just might be getting a chance to show the rest of the U.S. and maybe the world what she can do. She's recently launched a fundraiser to help fund her next album, this is her chance to really create an album that is uniquely hers and hopefully also raise enough money to tour farther than she has in the past and I'd like to help her achieve that goal because I think she deserves the chance. Margot has the voice, the skill, and the drive to be a huge success, now all she needs is the opportunity.

Please, take the chance to see what she has to say about her vision and then listen to her music, and decide for yourself. I think you'll come to the same conclusion I have.

Her fundraising site is here also check out (and buy) her music on iTunes and Facebook

Karmina

I started listening to Karmina (sisters  Kamille and Kelly Rudisil) with the release of their "The Kiss" EP back in 2007 and their full length album "Backwards Into Beauty" in 2008, and while I did love their music, for whatever reason, I lost track of what they were doing musically until just a couple of months ago. I discovered they had released a new EP "Car Train Ship Plane" in May 2011 (on their own KKR label) and after listening to it, I remembered why I had loved these girls in the first place.

The first thing you will notice are their amazing harmonies, but that's only the icing. The real treat is their songwriting. There isn't a bad song on their new EP, they're all wonderful, emotional and catchy as hell. My own personal favorite tracks being the beautiful "Go To Paris" and the powerful "Marching Now".

They've just come off a European tour and have an upcoming StageIt! show on September 8th and hopefully more shows to come. I'd love the opportunity to see them in person someday.

Please check out "Car Train Ship Plane" and their other music on iTunes - You won't be disappointed!

Debbie Gibson

So, yeah, Debbie Gibson isn't exactly an obscure or unknown artist, but I think oftentimes she's overlooked. During a discussion about her I had with a friend of mine, she mentioned she had "all her albums" and I discovered that she actually had never heard of any of her releases since her first three.
It was a bit of a surprise when I mentioned that she actually has had SEVEN more studio releases since her debut album "Out Of The Blue" (1987). This to me, is a tragedy. Debbie has run the gamut from pop, to Broadway to dance and she's produced a body of work that any artist would be proud to claim.

She's been an inspiration for me for years, she may have started as a signed artist but she was dropped from her label, Atlantic Records, after 1993's "Body Mind Soul" and she's been an independent artist ever since, with the exception of her recent Sony Japan album "Ms. Vocalist"
In all this time, she has never given up her dreams, even when a fickle public didn't pay attention.

Currently she is touring with fellow 80s artist Tiffany and if they're playing near you, you should be sure to check them out!

If you're curious at all about her "unknown" releases. They're available on iTunes and are honestly some of the finest pop albums I've ever heard (yes I'm biased, but this is my blog and I'm entitled)

On the off chance Deb actually sees this blog, I'd like to say something, and it's from the heart.

Dear Deborah,
I've followed you from the beginning, your music has been the soundtrack of my life, and I really don't have the words to express how much respect I have for you and how much your music means to me. I will always be a fan, and one of my greatest wishes is to actually be able to say this to you in person, but for now, this will have to do.
Love and respect, always.
Jim

A chat with Ally Burnett!

The amazing indie singer/songwriter, Ally Burnett graciously answered a few questions I sent to her. In true Ally fashion, she didn't pull any punches. Enjoy!

For those readers who might not be that familiar with you, can you tell us a little about yourself, and how long you've been pursuing music as a career?

Hi readers! I'm Ally Burnett. I'm a pop/rock singer/songwriter and lover of cats. I've been singing since I was 4, writing since I was about 10 and I've been actively pursuing a music career for about 7 years now.

I've seen you speak out about how difficult it is to get signed to a major label, could you expand on some of the difficulties you've faced with record labels?

The industry is just really broken right now and it seems like there's very little room made for real talent and real artists. Sure, I could show some skin and write mindless songs about getting "wasted" and partying just to get signed and make money, but that's not who I am and labels don't seem to like that. Despite the fact that I've had my music on numerous TV shows, written a theme song for a show on MTV and once sold over 14,000 songs in a single month, not a single label has knocked on my door. I don't really care much at this point because at least being unsigned means I actually get to see the money I make!

What is the biggest challenge you face as an independent artist?

Money. Being an independent artist is a lot more expensive than people realize. For example, to release new music I've got to pay for: studio time, a plane ticket (and the ridiculous checked baggage fees!), a hotel for anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, mastering of the songs/record, fees to copyright the music and about $50 to get it onto iTunes. Then there are all the other costs: merchandise, pro accounts on websites like Purevolume, photo shoots for up to date promos, web design, and Facebook advertising. Promotion is also challenging because there's only so much you can do on your own and there's only so much reach through social networking no matter how hard you are working at it. Labels invest hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars to promote their "artists"; that also means they get to tell people who and what to like. You can make anyone a star with enough money. That's why most of what you hear on the radio is crap. Haha

Where does your songwriting inspiration come from? Is it fair to say that some of your music is autobiographical?

Pretty much all of my songs are autobiographical. I write what I've been through, what I've felt. I feel like, if I've got to sing something over and over again it's got to be something I can sing with conviction. It's got to be real. I guess I just like feeling truly connected to it, really being able to express myself and hope that other people appreciate the honesty.

I know you use social media a lot for promotion, would you say that it is something essential for a independent artist to embrace in this day and age?

I can't imagine trying to be an independent artist without using social media and social networking. It's such an important tool for artists these days.

Some people look at music piracy as a victimless crime, I've even seen people suggest that artists give away their music for promotion's sake and earn money from shows and merchandise. I'd like to know the artist point of view. What is your opinion?

I'm so against people illegally downloading music. I don't think some people understand that illegally downloading music from an independent artist is like taking food off their table. I don't take money out of your hard earned paycheck, do I? And you know, you've got fans that want you to keep releasing more stuff but you can't if you're not making money because you're trying to dig yourself out of the hole from recording your previous record. I try my best to be good to the people that listen to my music. I offer lots of free downloads and give away tons of merch. I don't ever really see a penny from that. Like all the merch I sent off to Jawbreaking Jewelry and Noise Apparel to hand out at select Warped Tour dates....I'm not making a profit on that, I'm actually in the hole on it, but it's totally worth it if it means I get even a few new people interested in my music. I don't really play shows or tour, and when I do I'm not making much money there, and people aren't hitting up my merch store online so for me, song sales are pretty important.

Is there any chance of a tour in the foreseeable future? I for one would love to get a chance to see you live. Anything else in the works that you would like to let us know about?

I'm not currently planning any tours. One off shows and here and there and hopefully getting some college shows in the near future. I'm currently focusing on writing and prepping for more studio time (and maybe a new music video) this fall!

Thank you so much for your time Ally!

Please check out Ally Burnett on iTunes (she just added her "Heartbreaker Sampler") and follow her on Twitter Facebook and Purevolume.

of Verona

I've been following of Verona's frontwoman, Mandi Perkins since I heard her EP "Broken Window" in 2005 and while she was signed briefly to Sony, she's been an indie artist through and through, and I've been watching her new band closely ever since I've heard about it.

The best way I can describe of Verona is electro-pop with a rock sensibility. Mandi's vocals can be hypnotic and soothing and then hit you with their sheer power.

They've just released their debut EP "Fall Like Roses" and for a limited time, it's available for free on their Facebook page and the only word that seems to fit the album is, well, epic. Beautiful, melodic and forceful. In my opinion, it's a must download.

They currently have a residency at The Viper Room in West Hollywood, CA - check their Facebook for dates and times. I'm personally hoping they will tour outside California soon. I can only imagine how incredible they must be live.

Lizzy Hodgins

If you're reading this then you're likely from North America, and likely you've never heard of Lizzy. I expect this to change in the future. I've been following this Australia-based singer/songwriter from the first time I found her on MySpace and while she hasn't released an album she's been putting her music out there for quite a while, and it's definitely worth spreading the word about. She's got one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard, and on some songs, will just break your heart.

In spite of living in totally different time zones, I've actually had the privilege of communicating a little with Lizzy on Twitter and she comes across as an extremely sensitive, artistic and friendly person. I have a great deal of respect for her, and I hope she receives the respect, and recognition she deserves.

Listen to the songs I'm linking at the end of this post, and you'll be convinced.

Also, check out her official site, Twitter Facebook and Tumblr

Raven Quinn

One disadvantage to discovering an indie artist with a following is that I feel like I showed up late to a party. I just discovered Raven a few weeks ago, and found out that her self-titled debut album has been out since March 2010 and she's already started work on her follow up album. Oh well, learning about her hasn't exactly been a chore :)
Let's get the obvious out of the way, Raven is simply gorgeous, and she's got a amazingly versatile voice, she sounds at home with full on rockers (Giving Up The Ghost, Decadence, The Window) and beautiful ballads (Angel, Ballerina In A Music Box, Lotus)

She can stand her ground with any female rock vocalist I've heard and she deserves more attention than she's gotten. If you love strong songwriting and powerful vocals then you need to give Raven a listen.

If you're into Rock Band, she currently has three songs up on Rock Band Network (Decadence, Catalyst and The Window) so if you like the tunes, be sure to grab them.

She's also an amazing artist and there are some examples on her Facebook page, she's hinted that she might be offering some of her works for sale in the future.

Raven's official site is RavenQuin.com and she can also be found on MySpace Twitter and Facebook

I'm still alive

My apologies to the few readers I have. Honestly, I think I'm overwhelmed with how many bands that I have on my list. Part of me is thinking I'm not doing them justice. I'm considering re-doing how I handle band profiles. Going to try to do one a week and learn as much as possible about them before posting. Quality over quantity.

The Nearly Deads

I know a lot of people automatically think of country music when Nashville is mentioned, but I've seen so many amazing pop and rock bands come out out of there, it's becoming at least as important as Los Angeles or New York City for bands wanting to get heard.

The Nearly Deads is one of those amazing bands. As is becoming increasingly common, I found them because they started following me on Twitter, probably because I was following friends of theirs - Darling Parade (note to bands, Twitter is becoming an excellent way to find new fans, I've almost lost count of how many singers/band I've discovered due to a follow - more on this and the use of other social media in a future blog post)

The Nearly Deads are:
Theresa Jeanne (Vocals/keyboard)
Steve Tobi (Guitar)
Cory Walen (Drums)
Keith Lee (Bass)

Their self-titled EP in March 2011, and it's a solid alt-rock album, thoughtful lyrics, great musicianship and Theresa Jeanne's vocals are captivating.  She's got an extremely strong vocal presence and has just enough of a bite to her voice to keep things interesting. Stand-out tracks are "Thanks For Nothing" (which I can see featuring on someone's ugly break-up playlist) and the Paramore-esque "Never Look Back" the entire EP is impressive though, and well worth the listen.

Their EP is available on iTunes and check out the band on Facebook and Twitter.

Darling Parade

Nashville based Darling Parade is one of those bands that frankly, deserve to be better known than they are. I'd put them up against any pop/rock band out there. Excellent songwriting, strong instrumentals and impressive vocals. Then again, I guess that's the point of this blog, to get the word out :)

Darling Parade are:
Kristin Kearns - Vocals
Adam Hatfield - Guitar
Nate McCoy- Bass
Casey Conrad - Drums

They've released two EPs "Darling Parade" and "What You Want" - and while I think the standout tracks are "Change" and "Far Away" all the songs are excellent.

I absolutely adore Kristin Kearns vocals, and I've heard comparisons to Paramore's Hayley Williams and Hey Monday's Cassadee Pope, but I don't see it myself. Kristin's voice is deeper and richer and well-suited for the style of music.

If you like strong female vocalists and catchy, meaningful songs, you should do yourself a favor and pick up their EPs on iTunes.

Also check out their Twitter and Facebook and if they're playing in your area, go see them!

A few questions for Samantha Darnell

Amazing indie singer/songwriter Samantha Darnell was gracious enough to answer a few questions that I e-mailed to her, hope you find them as interesting as I did :)

Hi Sam, to start off with, I'd love to thank you for taking the time to answer my  questions :)

No problem!  Thank YOU for interviewing me :)

I know you're very much into retro fashion and music, but what modern convenience  could you not live without?

The internet.  I use it more than a person should be allowed to, haha.

I've seen a lot of indie artists fund various projects (such as tours and album  creation) from fan donations through sites like Kickstarter.com what is your  opinion about that? Is it something you would consider doing?

I actually signed up for that a month or so ago and will be launching it soon to help raise money for my next album, so keep an eye out for that and please help if you can!

Your retro-pop sound is wonderful and pretty unique, is it a style you see yourself  sticking with?

Thank you!  I'm always happy to hear someone refer to my music as unique because I'm a unique person, haha.  And yes, I plan on sticking to this genre.  It really captures who I am.

You're about to go on tour with Phone Calls From Home and Joy Island in June, and you're going to be making your New York debut at Angels And Kings on June 3rd as well, are there any other events coming up that we should know about?

It's actually now Phone Calls From Home and Rookie Of The Year.  I'm very excited for both the tour and the NYC show!  After I get home from the road, my main focus is going to be on getting my second EP done.  I'll probably play a show here and there during recording, though.

I know you're attracting some fans here on the West Coast, what can we do to make  it easier for you to break out here (or anywhere else)? I for one would love to see  you sometime!

I would love to get on the West as soon as possible!  The best thing you can do to help is to buy my record at www.itunes.com/samanthadarnell and tell anyone and EVERYONE you can about my music.  Your help means the world to me and I'm so grateful.

Your EP "The Art Of Breaking Hearts" (which, by the way, is completely amazing) has  only recently been released, but I've heard that you've already started writing for  another album. Any hints about the musical direction?

Thank you!  My next record is only half written, but it's already coming along great and I'm super anxious for it.  It's going to be the same kind of feel as the last...that vintage/pop sound.  Whatever come out, comes out.  The only rule I make is that I write each song to the best of my ability and stay true to myself.

Finally, I know that you've inspired a lot of people with your music (myself  included) but who inspires you?

All of the icons of the 20's-50's.  They inspire me musically, in performance and in fashion.  Also, any great singer/songwriter.  My hero is Conor Oberst.  He's such an amazing lyricist.  But most of all, my frans inspire me.  They're belief and support in what I do keeps me going and words can't express how much I love them <3.

Thanks again Sam!!

Fools For Rowan

Like a couple other artists I've blogged about, I did post about Fools For Rowan back on my old Tumblr, but I think it's time to revisit them.

I found out about FFR from some fellow Halestorm fans, and I can understand why there is quite a bit of overlap between the fans, both bands are truly excellent rock bands, with strong female vocalists. That said, there are some definite stylistic differences that I'll get to in a moment.

First the facts -  Fools For Rowan are:

Erin Mullins - Lead singer
Aaron Elliott - Bass guitar
Jordan Cullen - Drummer
Rachel Brandsness - Lead guitar
Ryan Nanney - Rhythm guitar

So, what can I say about them that doesn't make me sound like a gushing fanboy....very little I think. :)

I've honestly been a fan since the very first time I heard 'Burnt Around The Edges". FFR has a rock sound that is all their own. I really don't want to compare them to other bands, but at the risk of having my Halestorm friends attacking me (I kid, I kid) I actually like their sound more than Halestorm sometimes. They've got a more laid-back sound, not to say they can't rock, but they don't have the hard edge that Halestorm has, and sometimes that's just what I'm in the mood for.

Erin's voice is absolutely gorgeous, hopefully this doesn't sound too corny, but it's like a velvet covered hammer. One minute it's smooth and comfortable and then it hits and knocks you out. FFR also...well, for lack of a better term, is playful at times, a good example of this is "It's Alright" which is a sweet bit of pop/rock that will have you nodding your head along with the music.
They can get serious though, "Dead" is a break-up song to end all break-up songs. It's sadly beautiful, and devastating. Anyone who has been through the death of a relationship will completely understand whats being said.
The rest of the band is equally as amazing as Erin. Rachel's guitar work is impeccable, as is the musicianship of Arron, Ryan and Jordan.

They released their current album "Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled" last year and for a limited time, it's available for free for just signing up for their email list - HERE so no excuse for not giving them a listen.

They're about to go in to the studio to work on their next EP, and I'm really excited to hear more music from them. From the videos I've seen, they put on an amazing live show, and they do tour fairly often so if they're playing near you, go see them! Unfortunately, they won't be in my neck of the woods (Oregon) until next year, but it will be worth the wait.

Halestorm

So, I mentioned when I started this blog that I might veer off the indie music path and mention bands that are signed but still have that indie spirit. Halestorm fits that description perfectly. Halestorm started off with very definite indie roots, just Lzzy Hale and her brother Arejay way back in 1998 and they've paid their dues. I felt I needed to make a blog post about them because of the impact they've made in my life.

I didn't know about them until I saw their video for "I Get Off" (from their 2009 self-titled album) on TV, and I knew I was hooked. I'm a sucker for female rock vocals, and Lzzy has the best I've ever heard. It's not just about Lzzy tho. After seeing them live during their 2010 headlining tour, I got to meet all of the band, and they're amazing people. Halestorm, more than any other band I've seen, really cares about their fans. I've seen them go to enormous lengths to let people have a chance to meet them. They've even recently signed nearly ALL their tour merchandise at some recent dates, because the venue couldn't handle the crowd they'd generate for in-person signing, and even at that, they took the time after the show to hang with their fans. That's dedication, and one of the reasons I love them

They also have an active presence on Twitter and it's not uncommon to see various members of the band joking with fans, or giving them advice. Lzzy has been gracious enough to throw some advice my way, and is greatly responsible for giving me the confidence boost to start this blog.

Now about the music. Their debut album is still one of the finest rock albums I've ever heard. Some albums have tracks that are filler, but every song on this album is a winner. Since then, they've also released a live CD/DVD album "Live In Philly" which, if you haven't been able to catch a live show, is a great example of how amazing they are live. Their latest release is an EP called "ReAnimate: The Covers" and as the title implies, is a selection of cover songs from bands as diverse as Heart, Lady Gaga and Temple Of The Dog, and they do them all justice.

They're currently still on tour for a few more dates and if they're playing near you, please check them out, you won't regret it. They've also started work on their latest full-length album, which I'm very excited for.

Yes, I know this wound up being a giant love letter to Halestorm, but this is my blog, and I don't care :) Lzzy, Arejay, Joe, Josh - I love and respect you guys more than you'll ever know. Keep being awesome.

Chiara Young

A friend of mine introduced me to Toronto-based Chiara Young's music a few weeks ago, and I bought her EP off iTunes and I've been listening to it recently, but what prompted me to feature her on my blog was actually watching one of her Stickam chats. She honestly blew me away, someone who can sound that good, not only live, but with iffy streaming audio, is a real singer in my book. Also, she was completely charming during the chat, it's always nice to see musicians who don't take themselves too seriously and know how to be themselves.

Her current EP is called "They Must Be Dreaming" and it shows a lot of Chiara's potential. The songs are catchy, and while there is some auto-tuning, it suits the music and doesn't cover up her excellent voice. I think my favorite track is the title track and "Hearts In Hands" , but they're all very good, and fun to listen to. They would be a good addition to anyone's summer playlist.

I know she's got a lot of things in the works for the coming months, and I'm sure we're going to see and hear a lot more from Chiara soon!

So go check out her music below, and then be sure to check out her website, Facebook and Twitter

Blameshift - The Black Rose

First the facts: Blameshift is a New York based trio, composed of Jenny Mann on vocals, Tim Barbour on guitar and James Miller on drums.
I've been following them for a few months and they're truly a DIY band, they've worked so hard to get where they are, they've done shows all over the country, including Warped Tour and SXSW and they show no signs of stopping.

Their EP "The Black Rose" is an excellent rock album, and Jenny's vocals are put to good use. A particular favorite track is "Killing Me" which really showcases the band as a whole but the entire EP is definitely worth the purchase...but what's that? You don't have to buy it? Blameshift has made the gutsy move of putting "The Black Rose" up for download just for "liking" their Facebook page, so you really don't have an excuse for not giving them a try.

If you like them, tell someone, go to a show, buy merch. Bands like Blameshift live and die by word-of-mouth so don't be shy.

They're currently touring in the Northeast so if they're playing near you, go check them out!

Stephanie Schneiderman - Rubber Teardrop

It's time I recognized some local Portland, Oregon talent. My wife and I first saw Stephanie when we were visiting Portland in 1999 and saw her perform at Lilith Fair and we were taken by her amazing voice and talent. A couple years later we moved here and we've been watching Stephanie's career ever since. She's been a fixture of Portland music either on her own or with the trio "Dirty Martini" Recent years have produced a new sound for her and I personally love it.

Starting with the 2008 release of "Dangerous Fruit" Stephanie has been collaborating with producer/electronic musician Keith Schriner for a more electronic edge to her music, and it's a combination that works amazingly well. Her latest album "Rubber Teardrop" had it's official release party last night (May 6th) and my wife and I were honored to be in attendance. "Rubber Teardrop is an extraordinary album with a unique sound that demands attention. Stephanie deserves to be much more than a local artist, this album is something the whole world needs to hear.

Stephanie completely funded this album from a Kickstarter campaign, where her fans and supporters donated toward all the expenses involved with mixing, mastering, manufacturing, etc. this album. I honesty think that Kickstarter and other crowdsourcing funding sites like it are the future for the independent artist.

As always, I'm not going to pick it apart and tell you why you should listen, just follow the links I post and decide for yourself. I'm certain you'll love it, and if you do, let others know.

Fighting The Villain

I just discovered this band a couple of weeks ago but I wanted to talk about them and get the word out because this is a critical time for them.
FTV are a 5-member pop/rock band out of Hayward, CA.  I want to go in to more detail about them, but honestly I'm still learning about them. I do love their sound however and I really admire their DIY spirit. They're operating on a shoestring budget and they've still come out with some really professional tracks.

I'm trying not to compare them to other female fronted bands, but I'm thinking they wouldn't mind me saying that they do remind me a bit of Hey Monday! but mixed with a sound all their own. I love Caitlyn's vocals, she's got a very powerful, yet sweet voice, but I also really notice some exceptional instrumental work in their songs as well.
They've already released an EP "First Impression" and recently released a new single "Last Goodbye" which is the song that got me hooked.

So, this brings me to the reason I felt compelled to post this profile so soon. They're trying to raise enough money to replace their touring van. Their bassist is unemployed and the rest of the band are barely making ends meet, so this is a huge thing. Go listen to them, if you like them, buy their album, or please donate to their Kickstarter (there are some amazing incentives for you to choose from)

Edit: as I was writing this, I discovered that they have reached their Kickstarter goal, but don't let that stop you from helping. The more money, the better the van, and you're definitely getting a good return on your investment :)

So here is their Kickstarter page http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/274167066/do-you-want-to-be-a-part-of-our-touring-life

Adora

I'm way overdue in saying something about Adora. This Chicago-based band has an amazing sound and I think they are destined for great things. So while I try to come up with the right words, here are the facts.

Adora is:
Stormie Rae - Lead Vocals, Guitar
Keith Pink - Piano, Percussion, Vocals
Chris Eckstrum- Drumset, Programming
Michael Drew - Guitar, Vocals

Their EP "Save Yourself" was released late last year and it's been on my playlist ever since I bought it. They're all amazing musicians, and Stormie's vocals are a perfect mesh. Sweet without being sugary, powerful without screaming. She commands attention, and she and the band deliver.

If you're in Chicago, or one of the other cities in the area where they perform, check them out. Unfortunately being on the west coast, I've had to settle for watching their live videos on YouTube.

They've recently managed to raise enough funds through fan donations to start working on more new music, and this brings up something I'm going to address in a later post. I think the trend of fan-sponsored albums/tours is the way of the future in indie music.
By the way, if anyone reading this feels inclined to dismiss Stormie because she's female, I'd suggest you don't. She's a force to be reckoned with.

I've probably rambled enough about them, I think I should just shut up and let their music do the talking.

Alexz Johnson - Reloaded!

I first discovered Alexz when her show "Instant Star" was on the air, and I fell in love with her voice. The "Instant Star" soundtracks are still some of my all-time favorite albums, and when I heard that she was signed to Epic Records and was going to release an album of her own work I was so excited, of course, if you've been following her career, her album was shelved because of a shake-up at Epic. (As a side note, Alexz has stated that she has almost gotten all the rights back to the songs that would have been on her Epic album, so hopefully she'll release those soon)

This would probably have stopped some people, but not Alexz, she went the indie route and recorded "Voodoo" which was/is a brilliant album but arguably not commercial enough (I disagree with this) so Alexz, with the production help of The Demolition Crew, re-mixed all the songs from "Voodoo" and in my opinion, they did an amazing job, and as of today, "Reloaded" has been unleashed on the world!

I admire Alexz so much, she didn't let any setbacks stop her. She's determined to get her music out there, and didn't need a stinking label to do it.

So go listen! if you like what you hear please support her by buying one of her packages, or at least buy "Reloaded" on iTunes

Julie Corrigan

This post is a little more difficult to write than I thought. I've been following Julie's career for quite sometime and I'd like to think I've gotten to know her at least to some degree, and it's tough trying to describe all that she has to offer in a simple blog post.
Let's get the details out of the way, she's Ottawa, Ontario based, beautiful, talented and extremely sweet.

I guess the first thing I should mention is that voice. Julie has one of the purest voices I've ever heard. I'm honestly not always a  fan of people covering other people's music but when Julie does it she really puts her own stamp on the song and it's always a pleasure to listen to. Check out the YouTube links at the bottom of this post to see what I'm talking about. I bet you'll wind up smiling when you're finished.
Now, she's not all cover songs. She's released a few original songs, including her debut EP "Been Through the Fall" (available on iTunes) and they're extremely good, so good, in fact that they really make me wish that she'd release a full album of original material someday.

Besides her voice, Julie plays a mean guitar, is a great songwriter, and is utterly charming. She deserves to hit it big someday, and I've got a selfish reason for hoping it happens, I want to see her live! :)

So let me finish this up with a few links of interest and then please take the time to watch some of her YouTube videos, I think they'll convince you of her talent more than my words will.
