Margot MacDonald

Margot is one of those artists I appreciate and admire but unfortunately haven't gotten to know very well, and that's a big mistake on my part. Of course, being on the other side of the country does give me a little bit of an excuse. I do adore her music, and I guess that's what matters most :)

So, first a little background. Margot MacDonald is a Washington, DC based singer/songwriter who has been performing since a young age. Her first album "Rising" was released when she was just 12 years old. She first came to my attention not long after the release of her second album "Torn" in 2007 when she was 15. I was blown away when I heard this powerful rock voice coming out of this girl's mouth and with the release of "Walls" in 2009 I was even more impressed and also surprised that she's managed to basically remain a regional phenomenon. From what I've seen, she performs A LOT but isn't well known outside the general area.

Now at 19, Margot just might be getting a chance to show the rest of the U.S. and maybe the world what she can do. She's recently launched a fundraiser to help fund her next album, this is her chance to really create an album that is uniquely hers and hopefully also raise enough money to tour farther than she has in the past and I'd like to help her achieve that goal because I think she deserves the chance. Margot has the voice, the skill, and the drive to be a huge success, now all she needs is the opportunity.

Karmina

I started listening to Karmina (sisters  Kamille and Kelly Rudisil) with the release of their "The Kiss" EP back in 2007 and their full length album "Backwards Into Beauty" in 2008, and while I did love their music, for whatever reason, I lost track of what they were doing musically until just a couple of months ago. I discovered they had released a new EP "Car Train Ship Plane" in May 2011 (on their own KKR label) and after listening to it, I remembered why I had loved these girls in the first place.

The first thing you will notice are their amazing harmonies, but that's only the icing. The real treat is their songwriting. There isn't a bad song on their new EP, they're all wonderful, emotional and catchy as hell. My own personal favorite tracks being the beautiful "Go To Paris" and the powerful "Marching Now".

They've just come off a European tour and have an upcoming StageIt! show on September 8th and hopefully more shows to come. I'd love the opportunity to see them in person someday.

Debbie Gibson

So, yeah, Debbie Gibson isn't exactly an obscure or unknown artist, but I think oftentimes she's overlooked. During a discussion about her I had with a friend of mine, she mentioned she had "all her albums" and I discovered that she actually had never heard of any of her releases since her first three.
It was a bit of a surprise when I mentioned that she actually has had SEVEN more studio releases since her debut album "Out Of The Blue" (1987). This to me, is a tragedy. Debbie has run the gamut from pop, to Broadway to dance and she's produced a body of work that any artist would be proud to claim.

She's been an inspiration for me for years, she may have started as a signed artist but she was dropped from her label, Atlantic Records, after 1993's "Body Mind Soul" and she's been an independent artist ever since, with the exception of her recent Sony Japan album "Ms. Vocalist"
In all this time, she has never given up her dreams, even when a fickle public didn't pay attention.

Currently she is touring with fellow 80s artist Tiffany and if they're playing near you, you should be sure to check them out!

If you're curious at all about her "unknown" releases. They're available on iTunes and are honestly some of the finest pop albums I've ever heard (yes I'm biased, but this is my blog and I'm entitled)

Dear Deborah,
I've followed you from the beginning, your music has been the soundtrack of my life, and I really don't have the words to express how much respect I have for you and how much your music means to me. I will always be a fan, and one of my greatest wishes is to actually be able to say this to you in person, but for now, this will have to do.
